I realized the other day that it's been a long time since I've shared something that God's been teaching me with you guys. So I thought today would be a great day to do so because I'm at home sick.
Lately God has been teaching me what it means to be broken. I believe that brokenness is something that God wants from us. Makes sense, because if we're not truly broken over our sin, we're not truly repentant. It says in Psalm 51:17 that God will never despise a broken and contrite heart. (Contrite is just a fancy way of saying "repentant".) God has a plan for all of us, but I don't think He wants to use someone unbroken. God wants to use the broken. And sometimes God does whatever it takes to break that person.
The story of Esau and Jacob from Genesis comes to my mind. When they were born, the Lord expressed part of his plan for them by saying that "the older shall serve the younger" (25:23). But as the story progresses, we find out that Jacob (and his mother) tried to take this plan into his own hands by tricking Esau out of his birthright and their father's blessing. Now Esau was furious, so Jacob fled to live with his Uncle Laban. It was here that Jacob was broken. Jacob learned what it was like to be tricked out of something, by ending up with the wrong daughter after their wedding night. Uncle Laban tricked him into working 3 times as long as he had originally intended to. Talk about being mistreated. Talk about being broken. Finally, later on in Jacob's life, we find another time when God broke him. Quite literally. God dislocated Jacob's hip.
Now that may seem drastic, but it doesn't seem outrageous to me. That might've been the only way to get Jacob to finally become broken and repentant before the Lord God Almighty. Sometimes redemption requires discipline. Hebrews 12:6-10 says, "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness."
What a promise! God breaks us and disciplines us so that we may share his holiness.

#9: Influences
#9: List 10 people who have influenced you and describe how.
I'm not gonna lie, this one was really hard. There have been so many people who have influenced me, it was really hard to pick just 10. The thing about my influences though is that I'm just as easily influenced by famous people as I am by people around me, so I'm gonna do a little mixture of both. These are in no particular order:
1) My father
I mean, how could he not influence me? He's my dad. Just watching him live has influenced my life. He's an extremely hard worker, which has influenced me to be the same at my jobs. I guess he's taught me to work hard at my jobs, even if I don't like them. Sometimes you have to pay your dues before you get to where you wanna be, but it's all worth it in the end because you're not working for men, you're working for the Lord. Which brings us to the main influence my dad has had on me. He's just totally in love with Jesus, and you can tell. Jesus is his life. He just sets such an amazing example of what being a Christian looks like.
2) Jesus Christ
I think this is self-explanatory. Jesus is the reason I live. Quite literally.
3) Joylyn
She is the most amazing friend in the entire world. She's my best friend. We've known each other since grade 6, but we only became best friends in grade 11. I'm so incredibly thankful to God for her. She's always been there for me, even during those times when I felt like no one else was. She laughs at my jokes, even if they're really bad. She listens to my rants, even if they're super long. She comforts me when I'm upset, even if it's over the stupidest thing in the world. She's the greatest friend in the entire world. I love her so much.
4) Abby
She's so much more than just a Sunday school teacher. She's a friend and she's a mentor. Regular Sunday school teachers only really care about one hour out of the whole week on Sunday morning, but Abby… she did life with us. She endured those awkward junior high years. She listened to us complain about boys. She answered incredibly awkward questions about things that a 14 year old shouldn't even know about. She tried her hardest to stay up all night just to play Guitar Hero with us. She always beat us at Dance Dance Revolution. I admire her relationship with God. I admire how she never gave up on us girls, even though I know sometimes it would've been really easy to. I also admire her mother-ness (if that's a word). She's a natural.
5) Adam Young
I know some of you just laughed, but it's true. I'm a dreamer, I like to daydream. And I'm pretty sure that it was Young's music that influenced me to be a dreamer. As he says... reality is a lovely place, but I wouldn't wanna live there. He's also just such a positive person. He views life in a way that no one else does. Like every cloud has a silver lining times infinity. As he says... I'd rather waltz than just walk through the forest. Because just walking through life is boring, so dance your way through it instead.
6) Missy (Melissa)
She was my youth leader for so many years. And now, after all those years, she's turned into a friend. (Or a proud mother when it comes to Capernwray.) I think the way she's influenced me the most is she was the person that first introduced me to the concept of loving singlehood. She's married now, but a couple years ago, she had a conversation with us girls about how wonderful it is to be single. And how God has such special plans for you when you are. I absolutely admire her relationship with God.
7) Taylor Swift
I give you permission to laugh. There are some things that I don't agree with that she does, like bouncing so often and so quickly from guy to guy, but there are some ways in which she has influenced me. Don't care what other people think. Be yourself. Speak out. Stick to what you believe is right and don't waver. Be strong. Be fearless. When you fall down, stand back up. Keep trying.
8) J.R.R. Tolkien
This might be a strange one, but whatever. I really enjoy his books and I really love the kind of person he was and represented. His books have influenced me. I really love fantasy books (among my favourite genres), but the thing I love about Tolkien's books is there will, out of no where, come the most profound thing you could read. So real to reality. For example, in the Fellowship, this appears: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends." Like how profound is that? Other influences: Be adventurous. Don't be afraid to take a risk. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, you never know the things you can learn when you do so.
9) My grandfather
Before he died, he taught me a lot of stuff about God. To my recollection, he didn't really ever sit me down and teach me about God (like bible school did), but he taught me by his life and by his love. I was pretty young when he died so I don't remember much of him, but I just had to add him to my list.
10) Steve... Steve... Steve...
Steve Thiessen. He was my favourite lecturer at Capernwray. I love how crazy he is and how absolutely ridiculous he was, but I love how much he loved Christ. When he taught, it was like he was teaching us stuff that he was just learning himself. He was real. He was learning about Christ and applying it to his life just like we were, and it was cool to watch. (Not to mention, those crazy intense blue eyes that just kinda pierce into your soul...)
So there you have it. This took a long time to compile and to pick who I wanted to add in there. So no one feels left out, here a few more people that have influenced me: my mother, Mo, Karen, John Lennon, St. Peter, Matt Mclean, and whoever else that I can't think of at the moment. If you're following this blog, or have taught me anything ever in my life, consider yourself on this list.

#8: Passions
I have to admit that the timing of this blog post seemed absolutely perfect to me. There's a reason I posted this particular 30 things question on the beloved Day of Love. You'll see.
But first... a quote about passion: "There are two types of people in the world: people who are passionate about things, and people who've had their passion punched and beaten out of them." - Kevyn Aucoin
#8: What are 5 passions you have?
1) Repping the name of Christ!
I believe that this is a passion that every Christian should have. I also believe that this is something that every Christian fails at, a lot. No matter how "spiritual" you are or how much you love Jesus, every single Christian is going to fail miserably at this from time to time. It's the truth. It's hard to chew, but it's the truth. I think that's it's super important to not let that fact hold us back from repping the name of Christ though. It says in 1 Timothy 4 that we should set an example for all believers (and for everyone else too) in what you say, how you live, how you love, in your faith, and in your purity.
2) Music
I think that anyone who knows me, knows this. I absolutely love music. Music is what makes me tick. In fact, I even remember writing a whole essay on that fact in the ninth grade.
3) People
Anyone who knows me must think this particular one is pretty strange because I'm quite introverted and a very shy person (before I come out of my shell). I have a love-hate relationship with meeting new people. I hate it because people I don't know make me feel uncomfortable and I have some weird trust issues that still need to be worked out, but I love meeting new people because I love getting to know them. I love finding out what makes them tick, what makes them go off on a crazy three-hour rant because they're so passionate about it. People are so fascinating, so interesting, and so beautiful.
4) Purity
Now this is one of the things that I could personally go off on a crazy three-hour rant about. Just ask my best friend Joy. She knows. She's witnessed a couple of them. The flame started with a book that I read when I was 15 called "Every Young Woman's Battle". A book that I think every girl between the ages of like 13 to married should read. It's about guarding your heart, mind, and body against sexual temptations. The flame turned into a fire after listening to a certain youth pastor from Steinbach talk about his passion for purity. (Take a listen: http://southlandmedia.org/joomla/southland-seminars/sex-a-dating) Purity is so important.
Last, but certainly not least...
5) Being Single
I know you just laughed inside your head, or maybe out loud. But I'm serious. I absolutely adore being single. I've done the whole relationship thing before and it just wasn't satisfying for me (mind you, it wasn't with the right person). I am so passionate about this that it actually pains me to see a single person who is not happy to be single. I don't know about you, but those girls (and guys) that complain about being "forever alone" and that moan and grumble about wanting to be married... they are probably the most annoying thing to me in the entire world. I absolutely adore the people, but I would rather not hear all their complaining.
Now here's where I need to get right down and be completely serious. I love marriage. It's something that God created and it's absolutely beautiful. I believe it's a wonderful picture of how God loves us. I'm not dissing marriage at all. What pains me most is to see people I care about not enjoying life to the fullest because they wish they were married or in a relationship. My theory is that if you're not undoubtingly happy in the stage of life God has you in right now, you're not living life to its fullest potential. Ladies and gents, you are single in this very moment right now because of a magnificent plan that God has for your life. If you spend that time wishing you were in a different stage of life, you're missing out on all the wonderful stuff God has in store for you right now.
That is why I love being single. I find it to be such a special time between God and myself. Honestly, if I wasn`t single, I would have never gone to Capernwray, would have never met such wonderful people and would have never experienced the best year of my life. Nor would I have ever worked at Cedarwood. I believe that one day God will bring me my prince. (I just like to think that He's taking lots of extra time to prepare him for me, haha.) And if not? No worries, I'm okay with that too because that means it's just God and myself for the rest of my days. And it can't get any better than that.

#7: Dream Job
#7: What is your dream job, and why?
I have a love-hate relationship with this question. I love it because I'm a dreamer, and I love talking about my hopes and dreams. But I hate it because it also implies the ever-so-annoying "What do you want to be when you grow up?" question. I also hate this question because I never know what to tell the person who asks this. What dream job are you asking for? The attainable one or the wildly unattainable one? You expect an answer to the question you had in mind, but sometimes the person answers the other one instead. It's like asking a kid what he wants to be when he grows up, expecting an answer like a firefighter or a cop, but then the kid pipes up and says, "I wanna be Frodo Baggins". Now you're stuck looking dumb-founded, not knowing what to say.
So after annoying you and boring you with that splurge of thoughts from my brain, I've come to a conclusion. I will share both with you (although right now both seem to be equally in the unattainable and attainable section).
The Attainable One: I think it would be really cool to be a nutritionist. That's what I'm planning to go to university for. I absolutely love biology and the human body and stuff like that, but I also really love food. I also think that it would be mighty cool to be able to help people with something so simple, yet something that many people have issues with. More specifically, I think it would be really cool to work with people who struggle with eating disorders.
The Unattainable One: An author. I really love writing. Although quite attainable, this dream seems unattainable to me because I don't like it when people read something I wrote. For those who knew me in high school, I know, I did share lots of poetry and song lyrics and stuff that I wrote (in fact a lot of it is still up on Facebook), but let's be honest... a lot of that stuff sounds like something straight out of Taylor Swift's playbook. Guy broke my heart, blah blah blah, don't know where I belong in this world, blah blah blah, he's a jerk, blah blah blah. (I joke, but I actually kinda like her music, haha.) The other reason why this seems unattainable is because I have a problem with not finishing what I start. I have so many novel ideas in my head, so many chapter ones, and so many unfinished story outlines that I can't even count them. And nowadays my writing is more for me than anyone else. It's a healing thing. But I still think it would be really cool to share some of my stories in my head with the rest of the world.
So there you have it. Are you confused yet?
Stay tuned for the next thing: What are 5 passions you have?
I already know what I'm going to write about... the 5 is kinda gonna turn into 1. So be warned, read at your own risk. I'm going to be sharing the thing that I'm probably the most passionate about. (And surprisingly, it's probably not what some of you would expect.)

#6: The Hardest Thing
#6: What's the hardest thing you have ever experienced?
I've spent a lot of time thinking about this one. I've been thinking about it ever since I started this 30 things series (or at least trying to think up excuses to skip this particular question). For anyone who has met me, or even knows me at all, you know that I find it extremely hard to open up to people about stuff. But here I go...
The hardest thing I have ever experienced is this: discovering that someone I loved, cared for, or looked up to wasn't who I thought they were at all. To my recollection, this has happened three times in my life. I won't give any information on these people at all because it's not my place.
I think the hardest thing about this discovery was realizing the these three people had been living a lie in front of me the whole time. All of a sudden their walk contradicted their talk. And with one particular person, that was very hard to take.
I believe that's all I feel comfortable sharing about this, but I will end on one note. This summer, at camp, one of the songs that someone sang every week was called "Who You Say You Are". I only heard it once because it was the song sung during the parent's program on Saturday morning, but that one time I heard it, it just hit me like a cold splash of water. It's basically a song about how God is who He says He is. And that's exactly what I needed to hear then, to know that there is someone out there who is genuine. God is God, and He is no hypocrite.
And that truth won't ever change.

#5: Happy Is a Yuppie Word
#5: What are the 5 things that make you most happy right now?
1) Music. This is what makes me tick. It's always been something that makes me happy in life. I love listening to it, I love writing it, I love playing it, and I love singing it. I love that there is a kind of music for every emotion in life... like if I'm mad about something, Miranda Lambert and T Swift are my ladies. If I just wanna live in a dreamland for a little bit, I "pop in" some Owl City. If I'm sad, Lady A usually does the trick. If I just wanna dance alone in my room and forget about the worries of the world, MJ is my man. I LOVE MUSIC.
2) Puzzles. This may sound really lame, but puzzles help me figure stuff out. And plus they're just fun and it's totally rewarding when you finish a massive 1000 piece puzzle (and totally irritating when you realize that you've lost just ONE piece, ughhhh). Also a plus: after your done a puzzle, you now have artwork for your house! I'm especially appreciative of it now that I live alone and the only things hanging on the wall in my house are a couple calendars, a whiteboard and a photograph of the Beatles. Thomas Kinkade puzzles are my favourite. His paintings are so pretty.
Side note: does anyone else think the word "puzzle" is kinda weird? I mean, just think about it.
3) Books. I used to read a lot more books when I was younger. I wanna get back into it though. Before a couple weeks ago, I hadn't read anything but non-fiction books since high school probably. At bible school, I read a lot of apologetics and what was called "inspirational" books. I also read quite a few scientific books on evolution and creationism actually, which makes me sound like a total nerd. Anyway, as of yesterday when I thought of this, I've decided that I'm going to try to read a book a week. Even if I've read it before. Ya know, just to start reading more.
4) Nature. I'm not much of an outdoorsy person, but from time to time I do very much enjoy being in nature. It's a constant reminder of how epic God is. And let's not forget about the nature inside; the nature of the human body. Totally fascinating. Talk about an EPIC and AWESOME God we have, eh?
5) Christ. I put Him at the bottom of the list because He kind of sums up what makes me happy perfectly. He's the SOURCE of my happiness.
"Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow." - James 1:17 NLT
